From the Chief
Welcome to Northeast Lamar Fire, Rescue, & EMS.  As you look through our web
site, you will find that we are dedicated to providing the residents of northeast Lamar
county with the best in emergency services.  Since our inception in 1978, we have
continued to grow and expand in every aspect.  It will become evident that we are
very proud of our equipment and facilities as well as very excited about what the
future holds for Northeast Lamar.  We continue to work diligently with the leadership
of Lamar county and the water associations that serve our fire protection district, to
upgrade and improve fire suppression.  We have also begun working with the City of
Hattiesburg in an area recently annexed by the city that continues to lie within the
boundaries of Northeast Lamar Fire Protection District.  This new attitude of
cooperation and teamwork will further benefit the residents of northeast Lamar
county as we strive to provide the best in fire protection.
I would like to take a moment and draw your attention to
our page dedication to Chief Mac McKay.  Mac was a long
time member of this department and served as Chief for
seven years before his untimely death in 1995.  Mac had
responded to a working structure fire in the Central Lamar
fire area one afternoon in May 1995.  As usual in south
Mississippi it was hot and humid.  As the fire was brought
under control, Mac left the scene enroute back to The
University of Southern Mississippi where he worked.  Shortly after
leaving the scene, Mac suffered a severe heart attack while driving that would take
his life.  Mac was dedicated to "the department with the green trucks" and left having
done one of the things that meant the most to him, helping other people.  I recall as a
young captain, a conversation we had a few nights before.  Mac had told me that if
he ever died and there wasn't a fire, we had better start one.  That was his way of
letting us know how it wanted things to come to a close.  Mac did indeed pass doing
what he loved the most.  Our prayers and thoughts continue with Mac and his family
today.  Rest assured that Mac's wisdom and memory continues to guide me through
each decision I make.  Mac, I think you would be proud of what you started.  We miss
you.
